City builder

I have been thinking about it for a few weeks. It's more idea for now then a tool 🙂

I have started today and I will check how time I need it to write it.

It's a long shot but I will try.

What does the tool suppose to do?

I have a grid 5x5 with empty fields., One filed in game is 15m x 15m.

I can add with the tool what I want in my city (roads, buildings, trees) By now I have only 4 parts of the road.

I can rotate any field to match for example road's grid.

I can simply click Generate button if I'm happy from result and the tool generate lvl_def file with objects. So you will get a part of the city you like.

Then you can make your own empty room or add your txt file to existing room.

I will add more objects when tool will be ready.

Did you generate this screenshot with this tool?

no, it's sim city 😄 Game can't handle so many objects, it will be much simplier, but I could make a block (15m x 15m) and I could pack there for example a building, grass, few trees, pavement. Then you can place it where ever you want.

Pretty interesting and unconventional concept, I like it.

Well, interesting indeed, I wonder how it will work at the end in terms of performance 🙂

I didn't know you were such a programmer, so proud 🥲

Performance depends of the amount of the pieces/blocks and what kind of piece is this. Block with grass or road is more graphic card friendly then a building.

You don't have to use all blocks, you can make for example a road in the center with buildings aside.

you could look for some low poly buildings like this to help out with building performance. or give your buildings you got a lower poly count in blender.

Work Update #1

I found a good way to add objects to the tool. I wanted to let people to add theirs own objects

Objects path is located in tool path:

\_objects\

then we have terrain types

\roads

\buildings

\nature

In every terrain type there are objects in their own folders

How to add object?

Simply put all objects's files in a one folder. Then you have to prepare 2 images :

- view from above (it will rotate and help you to set the city)   foldersname + _rotation

- 3d view (you know what object is this.)  foldersname + _view

Folder name has to be the same as .h5 file and 2 prepared file.

I have to prepared now few objects for test purpose 🙂

Hi

looks great

is for H5 and for H4 work for both?

I dont know how lvl Def works in h4, but if similar like h5 then it will be no problem.

Work update #2

Adding object seems to work

Objects rotating and pictures work as well.

I have a final step up head, force generator to generate something 😝

Work update #3

The tool is almost finished. As far I saw everything works as I wanted.

I need some beta testers now 🙂

You guys have to tell me if all works fine and if I could do sometinhg better.

For now there are 4 roads, 1 building and 1 park.

Screens from my first generated city part..

1. Preparing city  in the tool....

Zrzut ekranu (157).png

2. I've got city.txt (generated file with objects - ready to use)

I added it to an existing room, so added this lines  to lvl_definition file:

[include]

city.txt = true

3. Run the game

The Klub 17-0739.jpg

The Klub 17-0740.jpg

The Klub 17-0741.jpg

As you see city plan  looks the same as in the tool. All building, streets are rotated corectly.

I know it looks ugly now, but the point was to make it work.

Using the tool:

You have to do all steps with every tile of the city.

1. Choose tile on the grid (check label under the grid if the tile is corectly clicked)

2. From first combo box choose art of tile you want to choose (buildings, roads, nature)

3. Choose from second combo box an object

4. Click button Rotation to .... rotate the object

5 IMPORTANT!  Do not forget to Save. Click Save button

6. Repeat steps 1-5 for every tile !!!!!

7. If you happy from result click Generate.

8. It's all, your generated file city.txt is in tool folder. Add it to your room, like  I wrote earlier.

I appreciate any help, hints or simply Thank you  🙂
