How to do re-texture existing items ?

Recommended Posts

So i think i understand that texutre is 2d pixels, and uv map tells where to put pixels on 3d object.

To change texture, i can paint the 3d object in different softwares, so that is one way. But like that is difficult to get complex patterns or even straight line.

So how is texutring like this possible ? i looked but could not find tutorial for this. it looks like white stripe with text is created in photoshop or something like that and then is applied to 3d object, how to do that ?

To understand uv mapping, easiest way will be to look it up on YouTube.

Retexturing existing pieces is way more simple and in essence comes down to 2D image manipulation, for which free programs like paint.net or GIMP are available. The UV map of a piece helps a lot because it tells you exactly how the 2D image texture will be applied on the 3D model in the game. The triangles of the uv represent the polygons of the model. Anything outside (white space) is ignored.

Easiest way to learn that is to use the UV map as a texture and start painting on it 🙂 to check for changes applied while game is running, best way is to undress and redress the piece.

In many cases, the uv map can be found in a resource file that comes with the addon. They can also be extracted from the scene file using blender but that’s already more advanced stuff, and for some pieces it’s obvious when looking at an existing texture

Thanks for the reply @vi363R !

i will try in following days, i didn't try using the UV map itself as texture... also didn't know changes can be visible so quickly and i don't have to restart the game, thanks for pro tip 😁

It is possible to paint in 2D mode (directly on texture) or in 3D mode (directly on the object).

When doing 3D painting, you can use apps like Photoshop (with 3D mode), Blender or Substance Painter. The way to put text on textures is using "projections", a leg is something like a cylinder, so such a cylindrical projection is giving good results in maintaining text without deformations.
