    Yes, you need a graphic software that can handle layers and png/dds files. If you want get a start you need to understand UVs and how a texture works.

    Check out this tutorial - its short and explains the basics (he will use the texture in blender, but the GIMP part is the important one):

    To create normals you'll find a software here in the download area. For sub and spec, you really don't need to create your own files from scratch - use the existing ones from hook and modify them.

    To handle dds files you need a plugin / software additionally to GIMP to make that happen - there are different ones out there - some are standalone, others are plugins - I am using this one: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/developer/articles/tool/intel-texture-works-plugin.html


    In general I would recommend that you try to modify an already existing ActiveMod or Hook skin first. In this way you'll learn how things fit together before you go and create something new. There are some explanations in the tutorial section.

    you were not supposed to clean that manually. there are more files to clean.
    as I said, please use the option in the option manager to clean the cache:

    select this option in the option manager, close the option manager and then restart the game.

    This doesn't look like a texture problem. This is a hook5 room and it's empty, the hook objects are missing.
    Did you install the hook objects for this room correctly?
    Is hook5 extended installed and working?

    The author wrote:

    Don't know if such rooms work with hook5 free/basic. Never used it.

    No Numbers needed like in the old days. Check CTK and you'll understand. You can name them "Blue1", "Blue2" etc. as an example.
