Added some more.
I beat Final Fantasy VII Rebirth earlier this week and would like to share some of my thoughts. First off, I'd give the game a 7.5 out of 10. Quite good, but not great. Some of the regions were confusing to navigate, some of the mini-games were just awful and the storytelling had a few headscratchers.
I was really disappointed that I didn't get to play as Cid or Vincent this time, i.e. none of them were playable in battle. I'm guessing Square Enix are saving that for part 3, but seeing as that's likely three years away at least, I can't help but feel cheated.
Now, on to spoiler talk:
There were two instances when I seriously wanted to take Cloud out of the party. First of all, there's the scene at the Gongaga reactor, when he got mindfucked by Sephiroth into believing that Tifa was not the "real" Tifa, and proceeded to attack her. Then for some bizarre reason, Tifa didn't confront Cloud about this incident afterwards. Like, WHAT??
Second of all, Cloud's behavior at the Temple of the Ancients. He was such an insufferable little shit towards everyone, especially Tifa and Aerith. Again, I understand that he was being mindfucked by Sephiroth, but after seeing Aerith's heartbreaking trial and hearing her heartfelt speech afterwards, only for Cloud to say, "Are you finished?" I SO wanted Barret and/or Tifa to beat some sense into his skull.
And then... the ending. Good God, the ending. I had a strong feeling that Aerith would die like in the OG game, but I was still hoping that I could save her. So when Cloud managed to block Sephiroth's sword, I was like, "YES! It's happening! Aerith's gonna live!" ...but then I saw the pool of blood on the ground and was like, "Oh no..."
If they had played the scene straight as in the OG game, I would have been sad but I would have understood it. But the way Rebirth kept going back and forth between Aerith being alive and Aerith being dead, I was like, "What the fuck is going on?" This was not helped by the fact that I got thrown into a seemingly neverending series of boss fights.
The way they handled her death in the OG game with having a Jenova boss fight take place while Aerith's theme is still playing, and then showing her burial, is one of the saddest but also most memorable moments in video game history. This time around, however, you first fight Jenova, then Sephiroth, then Sephiroth Reborn (aka Bizarro Sephiroth in the OG game translation), and then Sephiroth again. Like, there's too much going on! We aren't given time to grieve the death of Aerith like we were in the OG game.
I will say, though, that having Cloud team up with Zack, and later on team up with Aerith for the ultimate fight against Sephiroth, were among the highlights of the game.
But on the whole, I read one comment on GameFAQs that summed it up pretty well:
"Honestly the ending felt like a middle-finger RIGHT at the player. There are those who wanted a 1:1 remake. There are those (like me) who wanted to live out our childhood dreams of saving Aerith. This game satisfies neither while teasing both and flipping off both."
