To the untrained eye this is an unorthodox stance, but to those well versed in combat it's one of the most infamous defense stances in American history. Known as "52 Blocks", this stance was born on the prison yards of American penitentiaries. A compact defense stance that sees the fighter use his forward bicep, elbow and shoulder to form a shield, and his top arm as a brace, this stance gave birth to the "Philly Shell" stance made famous in American boxing in the 70s and 80s. For Herrig, this stance perfectly allows him to transition from defense to offense with little effort.
