This mission would actually be the last mission the 2 would conduct as squadmates, as the success of this mission would land both of them promotions to the rank of Captain, and leadership of their own platoons, which consist of 4 squads. In the US armed forces it scales like so:

  • Fireteam = 3 Marines lead by a Corporal (Cpl)
  • Squad (3 Fireteams) = 9 Marines lead by a Sergeant (Sgt)
  • Platoon (3 Squads) = 27 Marines lead by a Lieutenant (Lt)
  • Company (3 Platoons) = 243 Marines lead by a Captain (Cpt)
  • Battalion (3 Companies) = 729 Marines lead by a Lieutenant Colonel (LtCol)
  • Regiment (3 Battalions) = 2187 Marines lead by a Colonel (Col)
  • Marine Division (4 Regiments) = 6561 Marines lead by a Major (2 Star) General (MG)

For context, at the end of my career as a Marine I was a Staff Sergeant, which is the next rank above Sergeant...and I served 13 years. So yes, it takes a LOT to move up the ranks. I commanded a Squad for the final 3 years of my service before I was injured.

So this means as of current day, Lori is command of 243 troops? That's wild!!!

Yes. While designated an "Auditor", she still is indeed a captain in the USMC or a fictional Battalion called the 1st Battalion/9th Marines, aka the "Fightin' Niners" or the "Fightin' 9th". Herrig was in command of the fictional 2nd Battalion/9th Marines aka the "Hard Corps". While the battalion does still exists, many of its more distinguished ranks have defected to the Alpha Liberation Army. The present day 2/9 is commanded by a character I've yet to introduce by the name of Jacob "Jack" Reese...nephew of General Frank Reese and cousin to Henry & Hermione Reese. The Reese families roots run deep in the military, with there being several of them in the USMC and US Navy.

Ok then, that begs an even bigger question; why didn't Hank or Hermie follow in Papa Frank's footsteps into the Marines???

Short answer? Frank wouldn't allow them to.

Longer answer: Frank Reese is a veteran of 4 wars. He's seen the worst that humanity has to offer and the absolute horror war actually brings. He's lost many friends on the battlefield, men and women he believes were far more deserving to live them he was because during his days as a warfighter he earned his nickname "Grizzly" not because he was big like the bear. He became "Grizzly" Reese because he was prone to use the most barbaric, tactically effective techniques and strategies to win. Strategies that just barely skated over bein war crimes. Frank Reese is a hero to the Ozverse version of America...but he's in no way a saint. Knowing what he knows and seeing what he's seen, he made a vow to himself that he would never allow his children to walk the same path he did. There are many other Reese's in the military, among them the children of his younger brother David, who is an Admiral in the US Navy. Frank wanted his children to live free of the bindings to the military past generations of his family has had, as there has been a Reese involved in every war since the American Revolution.

Even though ironically, Hank's new venture into the tech industry will see his company come in contact and collaborate with Visiontech, the conglomerate owned and run by Susan Weaving...Lori's mother, creator of Sat-Nav...and a military contractor. So while he may not be IN the military he essentially becomes involved with them regardless. But that's all story developments to come in the next couple of volumes of both Stiel Maiden and TLWL.
